Episode 381
Are you creating new content in 2023?
GREAT! Here’s what you need to know…
Disclaimer: This is for people in the education and business space: you have an online business and are creating educational content for your customers/future clients.
Whether you’re adding a new platform to your content suite or starting something for the first time, there are three things I’d do if I were creating new content in 2023.
Today’s episode is full of examples of things I wished I had focused on back in 2018 when I was first getting started. And good news for you, all three things apply whether you’re creating a podcast, YouTube channel, or blog in the next twelve months!
1. Storytelling
You want someone to have a visceral reaction when they listen to your content, watch your video or read your blog post. You want your CTAs to be so compelling that someone has to stop what they’re doing and do what you asked them to do.
To be fair, storytelling is complicated. If it were easy, we’d all have compelling content that knocks the socks off our audience every time. But you and I both know that’s not happening.
So, if you’re brand new to content, here’s what I want you to do…
List out the things you think you want your content to be about. Then ask, “What stories do I have to share about this?”
It could be a personal example. It could be a story from a client or customer that you’ve worked with in the past. It could be from someone you learned from or admire. But you need to include a story in every piece of content you create.
Otherwise, it’s boring and falls flat.
Here’s a great example…
I was listening to one of my favorite podcasts, Armchair Expert, where Dax interviewed Mark Rober. Now, if you don’t have kids in the house under 15, you may not know who Mark Rober is. But if you do, you know that he’s the YouTube “science guy” that does crazy experiments on his YouTube Channel.
In the Armchair interview, Dax asked him about the key elements of his videos since he’s found so much success — he has over 23 million subscribers. And Mark said, “Storytelling — I try to tell stories that elicit a visceral response.” And that’s why I’m sharing that with you today.
Not only do I agree with Mark, but I’m going to take his advice and add it into more of the components of my content from today forward.
2. SEO
Whatever content you create, SEO — search engine optimization — can’t be an afterthought. It was cute to ignore SEO back in the day, but today — unless you have thousands of dollars you can spend on ads each month, you will be struggling to get your content out there in front of people.
So SEO is key to focus on while building your content platforms.
Unfortunately, discoverability is the name of the game. Just throwing titles for your videos, blog posts, or podcast episodes won’t help other people discover your fantastic content.
The worst thing is I know you’re working A** off to create your content. I see you working so hard to create amazing things for your audience. But NO ONE — I repeat, no one will be able to consume your incredible content if they can’t find it.
Learn SEO this year. It’s the best gift you can give yourself and your business. This episode is airing around the holidays, so if someone asks, “What do you want this holiday season?” You can tell them you want a course that teaches SEO basics! You don’t need to become an expert. But you need enough knowledge to make an impact as you build your platforms.
3. Have fun!
If you’re in the process of launching a brand new platform, which I know so many of the Radical Repurposes and Proffitt Podcasters are in this community, you have to have fun!
Sure, it’s going to be a learning curve when you’re just getting started; you’ll make mistakes, and things will be hard as you’re learning and growing, but overall — you should be having fun more than you’re not.
If you’re like, “Well, Krystal, I just got started, and I’m already NOT having fun. What do I do?” I recommend two things:
1. Ask yourself, How can I make this about my audience and less about me?
2. See where the fun stops and ask, Do I NEED to be doing this step in the process? Can I outsource it or not do it altogether?
So, no matter what type of content you’re creating in 2023, make sure you’re applying these three guidelines. And don’t forget to have fun!
